The town of Karlovac is located in the heart of Croatia where the mountain regions meet the plains, and at the juncture of four rivers: the Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and Dobra. It is situated 55 km south-west of Zagreb112 metres above sea level. The area of the modern-day town of Karlovac covers 402 km2, and with approximately 55,000 inhabitants it is a medium-sized Croatian town. The climate in Karlovac is a moderate continental one with hot summers and cold winters with snow.

Karlovac is the town of parks, rich culture, beer and one of the rare towns that has four rivers flowing through it. The largest one, Kupa, passes through the town centre, and Dobra and Korana flow into it. A bit further down at Turanj, the river Mrežnica flows into Korana. The rapids made by these rivers attract adventurers who wish to try their hand at canoeing or rafting.

Exciting green landscapes filled with activities and cultural heritage are ideally explored by car and are a favourite destination for an active vacation. The natural wealth of forests and rivers have left a deep mark in the tradition of the Karlovac region, and its location in central Croatia, at the border between the north and south, has marked its history. The town was founded as a six-pointed star fortress and it is an example of unconquerable forts built in the 16th century. Do visit the Dubovac Castle which CNN has listed among its 20 must-see places in Croatia.

Aquatika – Fresh water aquarium Aquatika is a public institution  primarily created to meet the demands of children and youth, students, scientists, aquarists and local population – not only to create  awareness of extraordinary biological diversity but also to meet the demands  and educate  its vistors to sustainably use the exceptional richness of  their mother country/homeland.

The Star – Karlovac fortress is the name of the oldest and central part of the town of Karlovac, the so-called Karlovac fortress, which was built in the 16th century as a Renaissance fortification system of a characteristic hexagon shape. This stellar fortress of geometrically correct and proportionate streets and squares is bordered by six five-sided bastions connected by earthy ramparts (curtines), which, on the outside, are accompanied by a fortress barge and a sloping, earthy embankment (glaciers, glaciers) that provides good defensive front fortress. Such a system of construction was the expression of the highest fortification ideas of that time, and it corresponded to the war strategy of that time in which the short-sighted artillery dominated. The star represents a unique historical and urban space and to this day it is a simbol of Karlovac.

Dubovac Castle was named after the once existing oak (dub) forest that surrounded it, and the name was subsequently transferred to a contemporary city neighborhood on the outskirts of Karlovac. Just as they used to say in the 16th century, “Karlovac under Dubovac”, because Dubovac was older and better known, so to this day the castle on the hill above the Kupa River is the most prominent landmark of the cultural and historical landscape of Karlovac, with a view of it opening up from the highway.

Karlovac Town Museum is a public, non-profit institution established in 1904 for the purpose of preserving and presenting the heritage of the city of Karlovac, the Karlovac region and its inhabitants. The Museum fulfils its mission by collecting, protecting, researching and documenting items of heritage and contemporary art, and presenting them in exhibitions, educational programs, publications and other activities.

Turanj military complex – on the southern entrances to the town of Karlovac, between the Karlovac-Slunj-Plitvice-Split state road and the Korana River, in the suburb of Turanj, lie the remnants of Austrian army barracks, a witness to the interesting and abundant military past of the town of Karlovac. For the citizens of Karlovac, Turanj is a symbol of victory and return, of new life emerging in war-torn areas. On the army barracks site, today one can find remnants of the facilities damaged by combat activities in the Homeland War, subsequently further devastated. The area around the facilities is the location of means of combat from the collection of weapons and army vehicles of the Homeland War.
In the future, Turanj should become a place of research and communication of the insights into the role of the town of Karlovac and the Karlovac region in the history of Croatia and Europe. The first step is to refurbish the area for the Karlovac 1991-1995 exhibition, in the building that was popularly called Hotel California by the defenders in the Homeland War.

Foginovo bath resort – towards the end of the 19th century, the analysis showed that Korana water was healing and then the beach was filled with guests looking for rest, refreshment and health. In the seventies and eighties of the last century, however, Korana was reluctant to receive all weekend tourists, and this picture is increasingly recurring in the last few years after a new bathing resort. With the abundance of accompanying contents on the shore and the river itself (bowling alley, beach volleyball, table tennis, basketball, hockey bowls, exercise equipment, and in the river – attractive equipment for young swimmers and water polo), it is worth noting that Foginovo is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. Swimming is not the only entertainment that is offered to visitors – dance and recreation animation, numerous sports tournaments, water exercise and larger events, from which the River cinema is especially distinguished, are only one part of the rich offer of Foginovo, which this summer is waiting for you in the new and a colorful carp.
